Attendance Policies
If you use assistive technology and experience difficulty accessing the information below, please contact the attendance office.
State law requires that students be in attendance at least 90% of the days the class is offered (excused and unexcused absences combined). Please refer to the CISD Secondary Student Handbook and the CHS Handbook Supplement for more complete information about the policies listed here.
You may contact us in written form or via email (chsattendance@conroeisd.net) to let us know a student will be absent for the day, and if a student needs to be released before the end of school. For daily attendance information, you may call the attendance office; please be aware that we will need to ask a few questions to verify your identity as the parent/guardian of the student
If your student is absent from school, please send a note with the following information:
- Student Name and ID number
- Date of absence
- Reason for absence
- Parent name, signature, AND phone number
Note: in order to excuse a student’s absence all the information above MUST be included in any note or email you send to the Attendance office.
Students are expected to be in class at the designated time. Tardiness will cause students to receive referrals for disciplinary action. Students who are more than 10 minutes late will be considered absent resulting in academic and disciplinary penalties. Three tardies are equal to one absence in reference to exemptions from final exams.
1. When a student is tardy to class 10 minutes or less, the teacher will input the tardy in the electronic grade book.
2. Any student arriving to class more than 10 minutes late is considered truant to class. The teacher will mark the student as absent in the electronic grade book, but document the late arrival in their records. Parents or guardians will be notified by phone or in writing about the documented absence. Students who present notes from the attendance office indicating an appointment with a health care professional should still be counted as absent but not reported to the assistant principal. The attendance office will input the correct data.
3. Excessive tardies will result in disciplinary action.
4. The tardy policy will be communicated via the school webpage and is subject to change.
If your student must arrive late to school, please send a note or come inside to the attendance office to sign the student in. Without any information from the parent, the absence will be unexcused.
The best way to arrange early pick-up for your child is to send a note on the morning of pick-up. The student will bring this note to the attendance office and a “Permit to Leave School” will be issued by the Assistant Principal. The student will show the permit to his/her teacher when it is time to leave, and then sign out at the attendance office. Please make sure your note includes all the pertinent information. You can also use the following campus form for your convenience. Click here to download the Early Pick-up/Release Formpdf
Proper ID is required to pick up any student or to inquire about a student’s attendance record. If you call, please understand that we need to ask a few questions to make sure you are the guardian of the student. We recommend that you know your child’s student ID number.
You may also call the attendance office, but this requires principal approval and verification, as well as sending a pass to the class to notify the student and teacher. We are unable to to send passes for students to leave class after 2:15 pm. You are welcome to text your student to meet you at the front when the bell rings at 2:35.
Students are expected to stay on campus for the entire school day. Studentsare not permitted to leave campus for lunch. As a courtesy, parents are welcome to bring lunch to the student and leave it at the front desk for the student to retrieve during lunch. The policy as dictated in the Conroe ISD Board Policy Manual is as follows:
DATE ISSUED: 12/2/2002
No student shall leave the campus during the school day without the appropriate permission from the appropriate administrator. After arriving at the campus for the school day, students are expected to remain there until the school day ends. Students may not leave campus for lunch.
Please email the attendance office and give the following information: student’s name, date(s) of absence, reason for absence, parent/guardian name/signature, and contact phone numbers. You may also send a note. You can also use the following campus form for your convenience. Click here to download the All-Day Absence Form.pdf
Please remind your student to use the clinic if he or she is not feeling well. Students in the clinic are not considered absent; in order to ensure his or her attendance is not affected, please remind your student that he or she must sign in at the clinic. In the event of a doctor’s appointment, a note from the health care provider must be submitted to the campus.
Students in 11th and 12th grades have a maximum of 2 days allowed for a college visit attendance code. The student or parent must get prior approval from a campus administrator (see Student Handbook section on pre-approved absences). The college visit form must be turned in to the attendance office after the student has completed the visit. You may also turn in a verification statement provided by the college or university at the time of the visit. Click here for the College Visit Packet here
The Health Care Provider attendance code allows the Attendance Office to change an absence to a present if the student has been present on campus for part of the day. In order for this change to be made, the student MUST sign in/out through the attendance office to provide a record of time of arrival/departure and confirm the student’s presence on campus on the day in question. Students who do not sign in/out through the attendance office will not be able to change their absence to a present, and a code of DOC (under medical care) will remain on his/her attendance record.
The Religious Holy Day form allows the attendance office to change the unexcused absence into a present for purposes of observing the student’s religious holiday. A religious holy day is a recognized date for religious purposes. Religious holy days do not include retreats, conferences, and conventions. A parent note or signature on the form is required.Click here to access the Religious Holy Day form.
The College Visit form allows the attendance office to change an excused absence into a present for purposes of a student’s visit to a college or university. However, it is necessary to request a pre-approved excused absence from the Assistant Principal who is in charge of your student. A code of college visit can only be used for two days in each grade (this code is only used for Juniors or Seniors). College visit days do not include time for travel; if a student is absent the day before or after a college visit, that day will be excused but will still count as an absence. A college/university official signature on the form is required. Instructions are included in a packet you can download here.Click here to download the College Visit Packet.
The Parent Request for Excused Absence form must be submitted in advance to the appropriate assistant principal. Approval will be based on the student’s attendance record, academic standing, and compliance with campus procedures. A maximum of five pre-approved absences per school year are allowed. Pre-approved absences are counted when determining if a student has attended 90% of class days. Make- up assignments are provided for absences approved in advance. Pre-approved absences do count against final exam exemption privileges.
The Student Pick-Up Information Update form can only be filled out by the student’s guardian. Proper identification is required. This form allows someone other than the guardian to pick up a student from school. It remains in force until the student graduates or the guardian changes it in writing.
