FAQs
Is Ecosia owned by Microsoft? ›
Ecosia is part of the Microsoft Search Network, which includes Yahoo, AOL and DuckDuckGo. This allows Ecosia to access the search algorithm that powers Bing, and Microsoft's network of advertisers, in exchange for a percentage of its ad revenue.
Why use Ecosia instead of Google? ›Since Ecosia uses its profits to plant trees, however, every search with Ecosia actually removes about 0.5 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere. This means that, if Ecosia were as big as Google, it could absorb 15% of all global CO2 emissions. The trees Ecosia is planting also have many other environmental benefits.
How secure is Ecosia? ›Is Ecosia legit — or fake? Yes, Ecosia is legit. While most search engines are only in it for profit, Ecosia puts purpose at the forefront of its work. You can trust Ecosia because it donates 80% of its profits, is certified as a B Corp, and releases transparent monthly reports.
Is Ecosia a private search engine? ›Ecosia is a “privacy friendly” search engine. We take user privacy very seriously. By using Ecosia (instead of for example Google) you drastically reduce the amount of data that is collected about you. At Ecosia, we don't create personal profiles of you, but anonymize all searches after 7 days.
Why is Ecosia slow? ›A drop in ad revenue and delayed planting due to social distancing measures have led us to slow down our tree counter – but not for long.
Who is Ecosia owned by? ›How does the search engine Ecosia make money? As with all search engines, Ecosia is paid by advertisers to put ads at the top of search results. When you or I click on these ads, the search engine is paid by the advertising company who is paying to have their ad displayed in prime position.
Why should I switch to Ecosia? ›Ecosia helps remove CO2 from the atmosphere
By adding solar energy to the grid, we help accelerate the energy transition away from fossil fuels. Additionally, the millions of trees we have planted fight the climate crisis by removing thousands of tonnes of CO2 from the air — every day.

What is the downside of DuckDuckGo? ›DuckDuckGo protects your privacy while you search, but it offers little defense against other threats on the Internet, like government surveillance and social media trackers. DuckDuckGo doesn't encrypt all your traffic, which means any prying eyes can still see your activity and IP address.

Your connection is forwarded from one computer to the next, with each step only knowing the previous one. On the plus side, this method results in a highly private connection.
Can private searches still be tracked? ›Private browsing only prevents your web browser from saving your browsing history. This means anyone else who uses your computer will not be able to see your online activity. Unfortunately, it doesn't guarantee security—your activity can still be tracked by websites.
Is DuckDuckGo completely private? ›DuckDuckGo search is completely anonymous, in line with our strict privacy policy. Each time you search on DuckDuckGo, you have a blank search history, as if you've never been there before. We simply don't store anything that can tie searches to you personally.
