Renowned sports gearmaker Hurley has recently dived into the eBike market with a stellar range of hybrid, cruiser, and urban electric bikes. Hurley eBikes are not just built differently, they also look different from everything else on the road.

But are they actually worth your money? Well, that’s what I’ll discuss in this blog. I’ll have a detailed look at the entire hurley lineup to see how good its eBikes are.

As of now, Hurley is offering the following bikes. All of them are Class 2 compliant, which means they come with both throttle and pedal-assist systems, and have a maximum speed of 20mph (32km/h).

The Hurley Amped is an urban electric bike with a sturdy build, simple drivetrain, and attractive styling. Its battery is lockable, and you can also remove it to ride the Amped like a conventional bike.

42.5lbs Weight

The Amped has a surprisingly lightweight steel frame that puts its net weight to just 42.5lbs (19.2kg) but can still haul riders weighing up to 265lbs (120kg).

Stunning Exterior

The best thing about this Hurley urban electric bike is its stunning exterior. You have leather-covered saddle & handle grips, sleek lines, and slightly-bent handlebar.

The compact LCD preserves the looks and the battery pack looks more like a water bottle. You also have a bright headlight and dual fenders.

Hybrid Version

The Amped is also available in a hybrid step-over configuration with a flat handlebar. This version is equally adorable but is more lightweight at 40lbs (18kg).

Massive 28” Wheels

Being an urban electric bike, the Amped has large 28” wheels with CST city parkour tires to efficiently roll over all obstacles.

Downsides?

The only notable downsides are small battery which translates to limited range and an outdated braking technology (caliper brakes), which means you would have to be more careful during your rides.

Review

The Hurley Tailside is the only electric mountain bike offered by the brand. It’s reliable, attractive and well-built… and comes complete with everything from dual sporty fenders to LCD display to multiple reflectors.

Dual Disc Brakes

The Tailside features dual mechanical brakes that work perfectly with the large 2.1” anti-slip all-terrain tires from CST to give you just the kind of stopping power you need at trails.

Front Suspension

The front fork has an incredible travel of 100mm to allow for smooth and comfortable sailing on sketchy terrains and rugged trails. The comfy saddle is there too, for the same purpose!

Shimano Drivetrain

Being an electric mountain bike, the Tailside features a 7-speed transmission from Shimano to let you gear up and down as and when you need.

Integrated Removable Battery

One of my favorite things about this Hurley bike is its sleek and clean exterior, all thanks to the internal downtube battery, which is fortunately removable as well.

Downsides?

The 36V 10Ah Lithium unit, however, is too small for a bike that costs above $1000. Other than that, the Tailside is a great ride in every way.

Review

The Hurley Carve is a road electric bike meant purely for the tarmac. It’s well-built, has a sturdy steel frame rated at 265lbs, and features plenty of looks.

Internal Battery

The most notable feature of the Hurley Carve is its internal 360Wh Lithium-ion battery, placed in the downtube.

This hidden placement allows for better weatherproofing as well as for a conventional exterior. It means no one can tell where you’re getting that superhuman strength from!

Massive Tires

The Carve comes with 27.5” wheels with thin road tires.

Just the sheer size of these tires is enough to defeat any obstacle you may encounter in an urban setting, as there’s hardly anything they can’t roll over.

Nimble Ride

While the flat handlebar ensures an optimum riding posture, the thin tire profile means you’ll face less resistance from the tarmac.

All in all, the Carve is pleasantly agile to ride. The power delivery is also very smooth.

Downsides?

Unfortunately, the Carve features older-style caliper brakes.

But as long as you ride carefully and responsibly, there can’t be a better bang for the buck. It’s simple, reliable, and stylish!

The Hurley Mini Swell is a fat tire electric bike with an attractively unique build and an unmistakable presence. Luckily, it packs a lot of comfort and capability as well.

Frame & Styling

The minimal and retro design of the Mini Swell has its roots in the vintage beach cruisers. It has a breath-taking design, a glossy exterior, and a removable battery pack.

Saddle & Hand Grips

The most noticeable thing is the giant saddle covered in hand-crafted soft-touch leather. The handle grips are also leather-cladded for a pleasant experience.

Fat Tires & Front Fork

The Mini Swell boasts 20×4” fat all-terrain tires, allowing you to ride on sand, rocks, hills, or wherever you want. You also have an impressive front fork for smooth rides.

Power & Drivetrain

With a 500W hub motor, the Mini Swell is the most powerful eBike offered by Hurley. Thankfully, you have a Shimano 6-speed transmission and multiple riding modes to control all that power.

You also have dual disc brakes to stop safely.

Downsides?

As for the downsides, this Hurley eBike weighs 66lbs (30kg). That’s not an issue in itself but becomes one when you consider the 480Wh Lithium battery.

Though it’s the biggest battery offered by the brand, it’s still less than the competition. And when it drains up, pedaling such a heavy fat tire bike isn’t easy for many riders.

But if you can manage with the limited range, then, yes… this Hurley bike is an absolute steal!

The Hurley Kickflip is a beach cruiser electric bike with a lightweight build, a removable battery, and a stylish cruiser frame with swept back handlebars.

Simple, Easy Riding

The steel frame is mid-step to allow for easy riding, while the overall riding posture is quite relaxed. Being single-speed (as beach cruisers typically are), this Hurley electric bike is simple, efficient, and low-maintenance.

LCD & Headlight

Like in other Hurley bikes, this too has a sleek and stealthy LCD display on the handlebar to preserve the typical cruiser looks, as well as a front headlight and wheel spokes reflectors for riding in the dark.

Saddle & Frame

The front fork is rigid, but thankfully the plush saddle ensures comfort on bumps. The seat is height adjustable and the frame can endure a maximum payload of 265lbs (120kg). This is great, when you consider that the Kickflip weighs just under 20kg, at 44lbs!

Downsides?

The two most notable downsides in this Hurley electric bike are outdated caliper brakes and the small 180Wh/ 36V 5Ah Lithium battery.

You honestly can’t expect a long range from this bike and it’s only suitable for short beach trips. But you can always use it like a conventional bike… as long as you want!

The Hurley Layback electric cruiser is the upgraded sibling of the Kickflip and is meant for those riders who want a more powerful motor as well as a longer ride.

Upgraded Powertrain

It has a bigger 350-watt brushless hub motor in its rear as well as a 36V 10Ah (360Wh) Lithium-ion battery – which is twice of the 180Wh unit seen in the Kickflip.

Sturdy Frame

As far as the frame and build is concerned, this Hurley electric bike comes with a slightly bigger steel frame and has a net weight of 47lbs (21.5kg). The load rating is the same 265lbs (120kg) and overall cruiser looks are also the same.

Swept Handlebar

The handlebar of the Layback is more sweptback (just like the ones from the vintage beach cruises of the 70s) for more relaxed riding.

Tires & Saddle

The Layback has massive tires (measuring 26” by 2.1”) and a plush saddle to ensure pleasant and comfortable rides.

Downsides?

The only downside is, again, the presence of outdated caliper brakes, as well as the absence of suspension. Being a beach cruiser, I can understand the rigid fork, but I think Hurley should have used better brakes at least in this upgraded bike.

It’s still good value for money, though!
