Keegan Murray's $140M Rookie Extension: A Big Win for the Sacramento Kings (2025)

Keegan Murray's future with the Sacramento Kings is now firmly secured! The young forward has inked a lucrative five-year, $140 million rookie contract extension, ensuring he'll be a key part of the Kings' roster through the 2030-31 season. This is big news for Sacramento, but what does it mean for Murray and the team's future?

Murray, selected as the No. 4 pick in the 2022 NBA draft, immediately made an impact, earning a spot on the All-Rookie team and helping the Kings break their long playoff drought. He quickly became a full-time starter, showcasing his potential. While his offensive stats have leveled off somewhat, Murray has evolved into a solid defender, a crucial asset for a Kings team known for its offensive prowess.

And this is where it gets interesting: Murray joins an elite club. According to ESPN Research, he's one of only three players to achieve the impressive feat of recording 500 3-pointers, 150 blocks, and 150 steals over the past three seasons. The other two players? Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Derrick White of the Boston Celtics. He's also the Kings' go-to perimeter defender, having guarded All-Stars in 1,005 half-court matchups last season, ranking him fifth in the NBA.

Last season, Murray averaged 12.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists while playing 34.3 minutes across 76 games. He's also been remarkably durable, playing in 233 out of 246 possible games in his career, starting all but two.

However, there's a slight bump in the road. Murray will miss at least the first 10 games of this season due to a thumb injury sustained during a preseason game, requiring surgery.

But here's where it gets controversial: Murray is one of only seven players in NBA history to have made at least 150 3-pointers in each of their first three seasons, according to ESPN Research. His absence will be felt, especially as the Kings aim to contend for a playoff spot in the competitive Western Conference.

Murray is one of six players to agree to a rookie extension this year before the deadline.
